Emergency Relief Coordinator

UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos is scheduled to visit South Sudan from 27 to 29 January 2014 to draw attention to the humanitarian consequences of the current crisis and to mobilize further support for vital aid efforts.

During her three-day visit, USG Amos is expected to meet with representatives of the Government, and humanitarian partners, and discuss ways to scale up relief assistance and improve access to communities in need. She will underscore the importance of ensuring the protection of civilians, and of aid workers.

Over the past six weeks, since the violence began in December 2013, more than half a million people have been displaced from their homes, including over 100,000 people who have fled to neighbouring countries including Uganda, Ethiopia and Sudan.

UN agencies and humanitarian partners have provided more than 250,000 people with life-saving assistance, including an estimated 70,000 people sheltering at UN bases across the country. Ms. Amos is expected to travel to the capital, Juba, and to Jonglei and Lakes States, where hundreds of thousands of families remain displaced.

On 29 January, Ms. Amos is scheduled to hold a press conference in Juba at the conclusion of her mission.
